Bodelschwingh’s family was loyally bound to the Royal House of Prussia. Both of his grandfathers had been Prussian Ministers of State. In his childhood, his father had been a playmate of the future Emperor Friedrich III, certainly also a reason for the family’s abiding loyalty to the Hohenzollern family. His son Fritz von Bodelschwingh also always enjoyed recalling a childhood encounter with the crown prince. At his ordination in 1905, he swore the oath to the king who was simultaneously supreme bishop of the Prussian Evangelical Church. All of this doubtlessly influenced Bodelschwingh’s political views lastingly: He was a conservative, monarchist, Prussian and nationalist. At times, the Nazis referred to him as a reactionary.
