At the height of his clash with the Nazi press over hiring the former Communist and felon Julius Brandt, Gerhard Dedeke preached a sermon that revealed the pressure under which he must have been personally. In this sermon on John 10:12–15, Dedeke commented on Jesus as the good shepherd in particular detail. The preacher demanded a kind of martyrdom – a clear allusion to his own extremely difficult situation.
