Even before Marga Meusel, Elisabeth Schmitz approached Pastor Friedrich von Bodelschwingh, the director of the diaconal institutions in Bethel in order to move him to take action for persecuted Jews. She requested a meeting that finally took place on 4 August, 1933. A memo in Bethel records the outcome: For the time being, only work in silence possible. Going public would do more harm than good. In addition, the duty of Christian charity must remain inviolate for individual emergencies.
