Joining the “Free Germany” Movement

In captivity, Schröder joined the “Free Germany” movement on July 12, 1943. He described his principal motive in a letter of 1946 to his wife: to preserve Germany from utter defeat and destruction. He was Camp 97’s delegate at the founding of the “League of German Officers”. He was elected to the National Committee for “Free Germany” (NKFD) in September of 1943.
