After graduating from high school, Johannes Schröder, son of a deacon, studied theology in Bethel, Erlangen, Göttingen and Kiel starting in the summer semester of 1928 with the support of the Kiel City Mission. He was active in the Christian, nondenominational Wingolf student fraternity, which did not practice academic fencing. While a university student, Schröder was keenly aware of the social hardships of his day but did not join in the political clashes in the Weimar Republic.
