Karl-Heinz Becker, a Franconian pastor influenced by Barthian theology, spoke out against National Socialism repeatedly in 1931 and 1932. He turned to his church government’s representatives and bodies in his writings and tried to move them to issue a statement.

The contradictions between Hitler’s central convictions and Christianity’s ethical tenets were obvious to Becker. He therefore called upon the church government to also take disciplinary action against pastors who mingled their commission to preach the Gospel with political activity for the NSDAP.

Becker issued admonitions in newspaper articles and publications as well and made reference to Luther’s doctrine of the state, which respected human beings’ personal freedom, quite unlike Communist and Nazi ideology.
