Wherever possible, the press, which was not yet entirely coordinated with the Nazi state, reported in detail on events within German Protestantism in the spring and summer of 1933. Two days before his election Reich Bishop on May 27, 1933, numerous newspapers were already reporting that Friedrich von Bodelschwingh had been designated Reich Bishop. The “Berliner Lokal Anzeiger” called Bodelschwingh the man in whom everyone in Protestant Germany has confidence – naturally that displeased the German Christians and their candidates and their “patron” Ludwig Müller whom the NSDAP openly supported.
