On June 27, 1942, the finance department at the Evangelical High Consistory instructed the church council in Dahlem to no longer provide any worship space for services with intercessory prayer by name. The Confessing Church congregation consequently continued its daily worship services in St. Anne’s Church and dispensed with reading the intercessory prayer list aloud.

In a letter of All Saints’ Day of 1942 Gollwitzer hinted at the danger of worship services without intercessory prayer becoming nothing but a gathering for personal edification. He harbored the hope however that everything continues to happen in your intercessory prayer that is expressed in the recitation of names: solidarity with the brethren’s suffering, witness to their suffering to the the world, urgent supplication for God’s help.
