Bestseller: “... und führen, wohin Du nicht willst
After four and a half years of captivity, Gollwitzer returned to Germany on December 31, 1949. While convalescing in Munich, he wrote down a report on his captivity as a prisoner of war in diary form, which was published in 1950 under the title “... und führen, wohin Du nicht willst” (Unwilling Journey: A Diary from Russia) and became a bestseller in the anti-Communist climate of the young Federal Republic of Germany.
Against the background of his experiences in Soviet labor and prisoner camps, Gollwitzer reached a critical opinion of Soviet Marxism-Leninism in his book. He also openly addressed German war crimes, however.
