Gollwitzer summed up the church’s stance toward and theological thought about obedience and resistance from 1933 to 1945 in an address on July 20, 1959 at an event of the student council of the Freie Universität Berlin commemorating the attempt to assassinate Hitler. He considered this to be a decision-making aid for current problems, too, such as conduct in a Communist state or in a military machinery drifting toward totalitarian elimination of conscience through nuclear armament.
