Like some of his ancestors on his father’s side who had served as pastors predominantly in the Altmark, Johannes Koch started studying Protestant theology in the summer semester of 1919, first in in Bonn, later in Kiel and then Münster. He became familiar with dialectical theology and was fascinated with its radicalness. He passed his First Theology Exam before the consistory in Koblenz in the fall of 1923 and his Second Theology Exam in the spring of 1925.
