Hardly still playing a role in the service of Soviet warfare since 1944, the NKFD and the BDO were disbanded on November 2, 1945. Some prominent members were allowed to return to Germany. Remaining members were sent to different camps.

In the postwar era, the NKFD experienced a widely differing reception in the GDR and in the FRG: In East Germany, it was officially extolled as a proponent of the antifascist struggle of all classes. In West Germany, its members were long accused of treason.

Its appraisal as a resistance organization, as an element of the outward struggle against the Nazi regime was long disputed in both historical scholarship and the general public. Today, the NKFD is mainly viewed as part of the diverse German resistance and given a more nuanced historical assessment.
