Johannes Schröder returned to Germany on December 8, 1945, first to Berlin. There, the church sought to recruit him to work in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SOZ). His contacts to the Soviet occupying power made him appear to be an important intermediary of church interests.

In February of 1946, the government of the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union made him a member of the High Consistory and entrusted him with the job of an advisor to the Evangelical High Consistory.

On February 7, 1946, Schröder made his last radio broadcast from what was then East Berlin. He spoke about Stalingrad.
