In his Easter pastoral letter of March 26, 1934, von Galen attacked emergent “neopaganism” and opposed the Nazi regime’s aspiration to establish a national church intended to be based on the doctrine of “race and blood” as well as its contempt for the Old Testament and the Ten Commandments. The views of Alfred Rosenberg, who postulated a “religion of blood”, prompted this pastoral letter.

Since the pastoral letter was read aloud on Easter Sunday, i.e. a day of heavy church attendance, its contents were surely disseminated widely.
